Acknowledging the influence of Minimalism, Color Field painting, printmaking, photography, and performance, Michael Johnson also draws from discussions surrounding land use, conservation, and hunting to create pictures that appear both familiar and new. Recently, he has been interested in leveraging the light-sensitive chemistry of alternative photo processes in an attempt to materialize an essence of the Earth’s constantly shifting atmospheric conditions across time, space, and site.

Michael Johnson was born and raised in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. He earned his undergraduate degree from Gustavus Adolphus College in 2010 and his MFA from the University of Minnesota in 2017.
